Juneteenth Celebration

June 15, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 6:00 pm

Bring your family and join in the fun as we commemorate Juneteenth, the day slavery ended in Texas. All are welcome! From the parade, to the car show and live music there is something for everyone.

● 11am Parade – Get to the Municipal Grounds early to secure the best view! Beginning at Central
Church parking lot, then heading down Brockett to end at Austin College.

● 12-6pm Celebration – Featuring a car show, all day R&B DJ, live music, face painting, food vendors, motorcycle club, Women Rock, local speakers and a scholarship presentation given to a graduating senior (sponsored by First United Bank).  The Kids Zone for ages 13 and below is FREE and full of activities that are sure to make lasting memories.

● 3-6pm – We’re bringing a band from out of town to perform at the municipal gazebo!

Juneteenth is hosted by the Neighborhood Recreation Committee of Sherman, Texas. This organization is comprised of African-American leaders who work to bring communities together and move them
forward. The Juneteenth celebration is educational, uplifting, and helps bridge the gap between past, present, and the future. First established as a holiday in 1980, Juneteenth marks the day the last 200,000 slaves in Texas were freed and the actual end of slavery in the United States. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation had declared all slaves were freed in 1863, it was not until June 19th, 1865 that Texas slaves would be freed. Today it is a national holiday celebrated across the country and the world, among people of all races, nationalities and religions as a win for humanity.
