On February 1 – 15, 2020 the Sherman City Chamber and City of Sherman will partner with the Dr. Bowie Scholarship Foundation to introduce, host and sponsor our first “GET ON THE BUS” Sherman/Denison “Black History Month Festival.” We will invite
and encourage other businesses and organizations to bring their events onto our annual calendar for support, assistance, and promotion, giving us the opportunity to promote the Festival at each event during that 2-week time frame. We will continually develop and maintain our own annual, signature program, “Get on the Bus with the Original Mississippi Freedom Riders.”
This year The Dr. Bowie Scholarship Foundation, Sherman Chamber of Commerce and City of Sherman will honor SIX of the Original Mississippi Freedom Riders by presenting
a 4-day civil rights extravaganza. The events, of which several will be held in Historic, Downtown Sherman, to include:
Feb. 11th “Freedom Riders,” The Movie, free, all day, at Schulman’s MBG Theater
Feb. 12th 9am – a scholarship award workshop for 10th/11th graders at their perspective schools in Sherman and Denison, hosted by Austin and Grayson Colleges students
Feb. 12th 5pm – a “Red Carpet Meet & Greet/Dinner” at the Sherman Municipal Ballroom for Sponsors & VIPs
Feb. 12th 7pm concert at Kidd-Key Auditorium of San Antonio’s Internationally Renowned R&B Artist, “Beverly Houston” & Breezing followed by the LEGENDARY TEMPTING TEMPTATIONS REVUE with NATE EVANSA Downtown Sherman after party will be hosted by the ever popular “Old Iron Post”
Feb. 13th 9 am – Freedom Riders Youth Summit at Sherman High School Auditorium
Feb. 13th 7pm – Freedom Riders Civil Rights Empowerment Summit / Panel Discussion at Grayson College, Free to the Public
